Welcome

The Lighting of Candles

You are invited to light a candle and set it next to you for the duration of this service.

A Reading from the Prophet Micah (4:1-4)

In days to come
    the mountain of the Lord’s house
shall be established as the highest of the mountains,
    and shall be raised up above the hills.
Peoples shall stream to it,
    and many nations shall come and say:
“Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord,
    to the house of the God of Jacob;
that he may teach us his ways
    and that we may walk in his paths.”
For out of Zion shall go forth instruction,
    and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.
He shall judge between many peoples,
    and shall arbitrate between strong nations far away;
they shall beat their swords into plowshares,
    and their spears into pruning hooks;
nation shall not lift up sword against nation,
    neither shall they learn war any more;
but they shall all sit under their own vines and under their own fig trees,
    and no one shall make them afraid;
    for the mouth of the Lord of hosts has spoken.

A Prayer for Peace

Eternal God, in whose perfect kingdom no sword is drawn but the sword of righteousness, no strength known but the strength of love: So mightily spread abroad your Spirit, that all peoples may be gathered under the banner of the Prince of Peace, as children of one Father; to whom be dominion and glory, now and for ever. Amen.

Silent Meditation

A Reading from Psalm 146

1  Hallelujah!
       Praise the Lord, O my soul! *
       I will praise the Lord as long as I live;
       I will sing praises to my God while I have my being.
2  Put not your trust in rulers, nor in any child of earth, *
       for there is no help in them.
3  When they breathe their last, they return to earth, *
       and in that day their thoughts perish.
4  Happy are they who have the God of Jacob for their help! *
       whose hope is in the Lord their God;
5  Who made heaven and earth, the seas, and all that is in them; *
       who keeps his promise for ever;
6  Who gives justice to those who are oppressed, *
       and food to those who hunger.
7  The Lord sets the prisoners free;
       the Lord opens the eyes of the blind; *
       the Lord lifts up those who are bowed down;
8  The Lord loves the righteous;
       the Lord cares for the stranger; *
       he sustains the orphan and widow,
       but frustrates the way of the wicked.
9  The Lord shall reign for ever, *
       your God, O Zion, throughout all generations.
       Hallelujah!

A Prayer for Social Justice

Grant, O God, that your holy and life-giving Spirit may so move every human heart and especially the hearts of the people of this land, that the barriers which divide us may crumble, suspicions disappear, and hatreds cease; that our divisions being healed, we may live in justice and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Silent Meditation

A Reading from the Letter of James (2:1-7, 12-17)

My brothers and sisters, do you with your acts of favoritism really believe in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ? For if a person with gold rings and in fine clothes comes into your assembly, and if a poor person in dirty clothes also comes in, and if you take notice of the one wearing the fine clothes and say, “Have a seat here, please,” while to the one who is poor you say, “Stand there,” or, “Sit at my feet,” have you not made distinctions among yourselves, and become judges with evil thoughts? Listen, my beloved brothers and sisters. Has not God chosen the poor in the world to be rich in faith and to be heirs of the kingdom that he has promised to those who love him? But you have dishonored the poor. Is it not the rich who oppress you? Is it not they who drag you into court? Is it not they who blaspheme the excellent name that was invoked over you? So speak and so act as those who are to be judged by the law of liberty. For judgment will be without mercy to anyone who has shown no mercy; mercy triumphs over judgment. What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but do not have works? Can faith save you? If a brother or sister is naked and lacks daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and eat your fill,” and yet you do not supply their bodily needs, what is the good of that? So faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead.

Reader       Here ends the reading.

A Prayer for the Oppressed

O God, look with pity upon the people in this land who live with injustice, terror, disease, and death as their constant companions. Have mercy upon us. Help us to
eliminate our cruelty to these our neighbors. Strengthen those who spend their lives establishing equal protection of the law and equal opportunities for all. And grant that every one of us may enjoy a fair portion of the riches of this land. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Silent Meditation

A Reading from the Gospel of Matthew (5:1-12)

When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying:

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
“Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
“Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
“Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.
“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
“Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Reader       Here ends the reading.

A Prayer in Times of Conflict

O God, you have bound us together in a common life. Help us, in the midst of our struggles for justice and truth, to confront one another without hatred or bitterness, and to work together with mutual forbearance and respect; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Silent Meditation

A Prayer for those who Influence Public Opinion

Almighty God, you proclaim your truth in every age by many voices: Direct, in our time, we pray, those who speak where many listen and write what many read; that they may do their part in making the heart of this people wise, its mind sound, and its will righteous; to the honor of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A Prayer for Local Government

Almighty God our heavenly Father, send down upon those who hold office in this Commonwealth the spirit of wisdom, charity, and justice; that with steadfast purpose they may faithfully serve in their offices to promote the well-being of all people; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A Prayer for Cities and Communities

Heavenly Father, in your Word you have given us a vision of that holy City to which the nations of the world bring their glory: Behold and visit, we pray, the cities of the earth. Renew the ties of mutual regard which form our civic life. Send us honest and able leaders. Enable us to eliminate poverty, prejudice, and oppression, that peace may prevail with righteousness, and justice with order, and that men and women from different cultures and with differing talents may find with one another the fulfillment of their humanity; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A Prayer for an Election

Almighty God, to whom we must account for all our powers and privileges: Guide the people of the United States and of this community in the election of officials and representatives; that, by faithful administration and wise laws, the rights of all may be protected and our nation be enabled to fulfill your purposes; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A Prayer for Sound Government

Officiant
      O Lord, bless the leaders of our land, that we may be a people at peace among ourselves and a blessing to other nations of the earth.
People          Lord, keep this nation under your care.

Officiant
      To the President and members of the Cabinet, to Governors of States, Mayors of Cities, and to all in administrative authority, grant wisdom and grace in the exercise of their duties.
People          Give grace to your servants, O Lord.

Officiant      To Senators and Representatives, and those who make our laws in States, Cities, and Towns, give courage, wisdom, and foresight to provide for the needs of all our people, and to fulfill our obligations in the community of nations.
People          Give grace to your servants, O Lord.

Officiant
      To the Judges and officers of our Courts give understanding and integrity, that human rights may be safeguarded and justice served.
People          Give grace to your servants, O Lord.

Officiant
      And finally, teach our people to rely on your strength and to accept their responsibilities to their fellow citizens, that they may elect trustworthy leaders and make wise decisions for the well-being of our society; that we may serve you faithfully in our generation and honor your holy Name.
People          For yours is the kingdom, O Lord, and the power, and the glory. Amen.

A Litany of Thanksgiving for the Nation

Officiant
      Almighty God, giver of all good things: We thank you for the natural majesty and beauty of this land. They restore us, though we often destroy them.
People          Heal us.

Officiant
      We thank you for the great resources of this nation. They make us rich, though we often exploit them.
People          Forgive us.

Officiant
      We thank you for the men and women who have made this country strong. They are models for us, though we often fall short of them.
People          Inspire us.

Officiant      We thank you for the torch of liberty which has been lit in this land. It has drawn people from every nation, though we have often hidden from its light.
People          Enlighten us.

Officiant      We thank you for the faith we have inherited in all its rich variety. It sustains our life, though we have been faithless again and again.
People          Renew us.

Officiant      Help us, O Lord, to finish the good work here begun. Strengthen our efforts to blot out ignorance and prejudice, and to abolish poverty and crime. And hasten the day when all people, with many voices in one united chorus, will glorify your holy Name.
People          Amen.
