The Collect of the Day

Priest     The Lord be with you.
People     And also with you.
Priest     Let us pray.

Almighty God, on this day you opened the way of eternal life to every race and nation by the promised gift of your Holy Spirit: Shed abroad this gift throughout the world by the preaching of the Gospel, that it may reach to the ends of the earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Liturgy of the Word

First Lesson: Acts 2:1-21

When the day of Pentecost had come, the disciples were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs—in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.” All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” But others sneered and said, “They are filled with new wine.” But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, “Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o’clock in the morning. No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: ‘In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord’s great and glorious day. Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.’”

Psalm 104:25-35, 37

25  O Lord, how manifold are your works! *
in wisdom you have made them all;
the earth is full of your creatures.

26  Yonder is the great and wide sea
with its living things too many to number, *
creatures both small and great.

27  There move the ships,
and there is that Leviathan, *
which you have made for the sport of it.

28  All of them look to you *
to give them their food in due season.

29  You give it to them; they gather it; *
you open your hand, and they are filled with good things.

30  You hide your face, and they are terrified; *
you take away their breath,
and they die and return to their dust.

31  You send forth your Spirit, and they are created; *
and so you renew the face of the earth.

32  May the glory of the Lord endure for ever; *
may the Lord rejoice in all his works.

33  He looks at the earth and it trembles; *
he touches the mountains and they smoke.

34  I will sing to the Lord as long as I live; *
I will praise my God while I have my being.

35  May these words of mine please him; *
I will rejoice in the Lord.

37  Bless the Lord, O my soul. *
Hallelujah!

Second Lesson: Romans 8:22-27

We know that the whole creation has been groaning in labor pains until now; and not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly while we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies. For in hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what is seen? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience. Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words. And God, who searches the heart, knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

Hymn 511: “Holy Spirit, ever living”

1.  Holy Spirit, ever living as the Church’s very life;
     Holy Spirit, ever striving through her in a ceaseless strife;
     Holy Spirit, ever forming in the Church the mind of Christ;
     thee we praise with endless worship for thy fruits and gifts unpriced.

2.  Holy Spirit, ever working through the Church’s ministry;
     quickening, strengthening, and absolving, setting captive sinners free;
     Holy Spirit, ever binding age to age, and soul to soul,
     in a fellowship unending thee we worship and extol.

The Pentecost Sequence Sung by the choir

Come Holy Spirit come and from your celestial home. Shed a ray of light divine! Come thou father of the poor. Come thou source of all our store. Come within our bosoms shine. You, of comforters the best, You the soul’s most welcome guest: Sweet refreshment here below. In our labor, rest most sweet, Grateful coolness in the heat; Solace in the midst of woe. O most blessed Light Divine may that light within us shine and our inmost being fill!  Where you are not, we have naught, nothing good in deed or thought, nothing free from taint and ill. Heal our wounds, our strength renew on our dryness, pour your dew; Wash the stains of guilt away; Bend the stubborn heart and will; melt the frozen, warm the chill; Guide the steps that go astray. On the faithful who adore and confess you evermore in your sevn’fold gift descend; Give them virtues’ sure reward; Give them your salvation, Lord. Give them joys that never end. Amen, Alleluia.

Alleluia

The choir sings the Alleluias, then all repeat them.

The Gospel: John 15:26-27; 16:4b-15

Priest      The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to John.
People     Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Jesus said to his disciples, “When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who comes from the Father, he will testify on my behalf. You also are to testify because you have been with me from the beginning.

“I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. But now I am going to him who sent me; yet none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your hearts. Nevertheless I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will prove the world wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: about sin, because they do not believe in me; about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will see me no longer; about judgment, because the ruler of this world has been condemned.

“I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

Priest     The Gospel of the Lord.
People     Praise to you, Lord Christ.

Offertory Anthem: “Hail This Joyful Day’s Return”     Craig Phillips

Hail this joyful day’s return,
hail the Pentecostal morn,
morn when our ascended Lord
on his Church his Spirit poured! Alleluia!
Like to cloven tongues of flame,
on the twelve the Spirit came
tongues, that earth may hear their call,
fire, that love may burn in all.
Lord, to you your people bend;
unto us your Spirit send;
blessings of this sacred day;
grant us, dearest Lord, we pray.
You who did our forebears guide,
with their children still abide;
grant us pardon, grant us peace,
till our earthly wand’rings cease. Alleluia!

The Great Thanksgiving:
Eucharistic Prayer A

The people stand and the priest sings

Priest     The Lord be with you.
People     And also with you.
Priest     Lift up your hearts.
People     We lift them to the Lord.
Priest     Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
People     It is right to give him thanks and praise.

The priest continues

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. But chiefly are we bound to praise you for the glorious resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; for he is the true Paschal Lamb, who was sacrificed for us, and has taken away the sin of the world. By his death he has destroyed death, and by his rising to life again he has won for us everlasting life. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

Sanctus et Benedictus qui venit                                           #854, Wonder, Love, & Praise

The priest continues

Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself, and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all.

He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world.

On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:

Priest and People

Christ has died.
Christ is risen.
Christ will come again.

The priest continues

We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts.

Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom.

All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ: By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

The Fraction

The priest breaks the consecrated Bread. A period of silence is kept.

Celebrant           Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us;
People               Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia.

Agnus Dei             Missa de Angelis

Priest The Gifts of God for the People of God.

Spiritual Communion: Act of Reception

During Communion, you are invited to say the following prayer form for receiving Spiritual Communion. Know that the grace of God is made present in your heart, even though the Sacrament is not received with the mouth.

In union, blessed Jesus, with the faithful gathered at every altar of your Church where your blessed Body and Blood are offered this day, I long to offer you praise and thanksgiving, for creation and all the blessings of this life, for the redemption won for us by your life, death, and resurrection, for the means of grace and the hope of glory.

I believe that you are truly present in the Holy Sacrament, and, since I cannot at this time receive communion, I pray you to come into my heart. I unite myself with you and embrace you with all my heart, my soul, and my mind. Let nothing separate me from you; let me serve you in this life until, by your grace, I come to your glorious kingdom and unending peace. Amen.

Come Lord Jesus, and dwell in my heart in the fullness of your strength; be my wisdom and guide me in right pathways; conform my life and actions to the image of your holiness; and, in the power of your gracious might, rule over every hostile power that threatens or disturbs the growth of your kingdom, who with the Father and the Holy Spirit, lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.

Communion Anthem:
“The Spirit of the Lord” Philip Stopford

The spirit of the Lord is upon me.
The spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because he hath anointed me
to preach the gospel to the poor.
He hath sent me to heal the broken-hearted,
to preach deliverance to the captives
and recovering of sight to the blind,
to preach the acceptable year of the Lord,
to give unto them that mourn
a garland for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning,
the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness,
that they might be called trees of righteousness,
the planting of the Lord,
that he might be glorified.
For as the earth bringeth forth her bud,
and as the garden causeth the things
that are sown in in it to spring forth,
so the Lord God will cause the righteousness
and praise to spring forth before the nations.
The spirit of the Lord.

Hymn 516: “Come down, O love divine”

1. Come down, O Love divine,
seek thou this soul of mine,
and visit it with thine own ardor glowing;
O Comforter, draw near,
within my heart appear,
and kindle it, thy holy flame bestowing.

2. O let it freely burn,
till earthly passions turn
to dust and ashes in its heat consuming;
and let thy glorious light
shine ever on my sight,
and clothe me round, the while my path illuming.

3. And so the yearning strong,
with which the soul will long,
shall far outpass the power of human telling;
for none can guess its grace,
till Love create a place
wherein the Holy Spirit makes a dwelling.

After Communion, the priest says

Let us pray.

Priest and People

Eternal God, heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen.
